Second World War and the Exeter Blitz Gallery Handling

Unfortunately the 307 Polish Squadron will not be able to join us during the October 2026 autumn half-term. They will be back on Tuesday 16 February 2027. Step back in time and uncover the powerful stories of Exeter during the Second World War. Join us at RAMM to explore our evocative collection on the Blitz and the everyday experience of life during wartime. Guided by our knowledgeable volunteers, you’ll have the opportunity to handle authentic and replica objects, from household items used on the Home Front to artefacts that reveal the impact of the devastating air raids on the city. This is a drop-in activity for individuals, families and small groups. The activity is fully accessible, except for the air-raid shelter experience, some participants may find they cannot enter the Anderson Shelter due to restricted access. Discover how Exeter’s communities adapted, endured, and found resilience in the face of conflict. Come and get hands‑on with history—your journey into wartime Exeter begins here! During the school half‑term holiday gallery handling dates, RAMM also hosts the inspiring 307 Polish Squadron Project display—a tribute to the Polish night‑fighter squadron who defended Exeter during the Blitz. Their display offers an additional opportunity for visitors to explore the city’s wartime history and the vital role of international allies. 307 Polish Squadron Facebook page. This activity is not suitable as a whole day museum‑led school visit. However, a 20 minute visit to the handling tables in small groups can be incorporated into a booked teacher led school visit, just ensure you book your teacher-led visit on a date that the Second World War handling will be taking place. Information about accessibility is available on our Access page.
